The “Aizen Matsuri” is a seasonal tradition that heralds the arrival of early summer in Osaka.
It is counted among Osaka’s three major summer festivals, alongside the Tenjin Matsuri and the Sumiyoshi Matsuri.
The festival takes place at Aizendo Shoman-in Temple. Known for bestowing blessings related to romantic connections and matchmaking, the temple is adorned in its most vibrant colors during these three days.
5.1 Held annually in late June! Highlights and history of the Aizen Matsuri
The Aizen Matsuri takes place every year from June 30th to July 2nd. As the rainy season draws to a close, the Tennoji district of Osaka becomes filled with an atmosphere of romance and connection.
🔹 Festival roots and origins
・Its origins date back to the era of Empress Suiko (approximately 1,400 years ago).
・It began as a way to pray for protection against summer epidemics and for good health, seeking the divine favor of Aizen Myoo (the Wisdom King of Passionate Love).
・Affectionately known as “Aizen-san” the festival bustles with visitors from across the country, as well as local residents.
🔹 The festival’s symbol: The “Hoe-kago” (Celebratory Palanquin)
・A traditional procession featuring “Aizen Musume” (Aizen Maidens) dressed as maiko (apprentice geisha), riding in flower-adorned palanquins known as Hoe-kago.
・The procession advances to the rhythmic chant of “Hoe-kago, Hoe-kago”—a signature sight of the festival!
・With its glamorous and vibrant atmosphere, the scene resembles a beautiful picture scroll that perfectly embodies the theme of “finding love.”
5.2 Schedule of Processions, Rituals, and Events
The Aizen Festival features a variety of spiritual and cultural events held over the course of three days.
Here is the schedule, packed with highlights:
🔹 June 30: Opening & Hoe-kago (Treasure Palanquin) Procession
・Morning: Flower basket procession featuring the “Aizen-musume” (festival maidens)
・Afternoon: Grand memorial service (prayers for matchmaking and warding off evil)
・Food stalls line the streets, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the temple grounds!
🔹 July 1: Aizen Ennichi (Festival Day) & Spiritual Blessings
・”Ennichi Memorial Service” held; a surge of visitors comes to pray for romance and marriage
・Special matchmaking amulets and limited-edition goshuin (temple seals) are available
・Performances and ritual arts are also presented
🔹 July 2: Festival Finale
・”Goma Fire Ritual” for good health and freedom from illness held at the Aizen-do Main Hall
・The temple remains open for worship after the ritual; a recommended day for those wishing to pray quietly

5.3 Enjoy in a Yukata! A Photogenic Summer Tradition
Another highlight of the Aizen Festival is how much more enjoyable it becomes when you attend wearing a yukata (summer kimono).
“Visiting to pray for love while wearing a yukata” has become a popular tradition, especially among women hoping to boost their romantic luck.
